Zinnie's East

When I lived in Midtown Memphis during the late 80's, my favorite watering hole was Zinnie's. It was in staggering distance of my apartment and a great place to hang out.

But I moved on... and so did Zinnie's.

My trek has brought me to the World Headquarters of the Carl Lee Bledsoe Website, located in a high tech underground basement lair north of Memphis.

Zinnie's? Well, they were able to move on too, half of a block eastward. Baby steps, but bless their hearts for the effort, because that's where Carl liked to hang out.

I've been there with him a time or three.

He loved Zinnie's East, and he loved the people there, so I am proud to announce:

A special gathering of Carl's friends will be held at Zinnie's East on Thursday, the 25th of October, starting at 5:00 pm until ?.

For info on Zinnie's East (and directions) please click here.

Rumor has it that Budweiser will be there doing a beer promotion. So, in his own way, Carl has managed to buy a last round of drinks for his friends, while not spending a dollar.

Well played Carl- so thanks in advance for the beer- and for being my friend.

Rest In Peace

At 3:47 pm on Saturday, the 20th of October, 2007,

Carl Lee Bledsoe III passed away.

Carl was not a fan of funerals, so there won't be one for him. His remains will be cremated.

Any plans of an organized "service" to celebrate his life and times will be updated here. Until then, just swing by Zinnie's East in Midtown and toss back a few with his friends there.

Rest In Peace, Carl

Sadness

Our hearts go out to Tammie and the rest of Carl's family.

Fred and Ginger too.

We feel your loss as we feel the void in our lives as well.

Carl was a great person, and a great friend, and he will be missed so much.

We Love You, Carl!

Prayers From The Internet

If Carl had been an internet guy, he would have been a WAMKer.

The writer, and commenters, at the Where Are My Keys? website (WAMK) would like to give their deepest thoughts and prayers to Carl's family and friends during this time.

Carl's Website

Welcome to the Carl Lee Bledsoe III website

On Friday, September 28th, Carl was rushed to Methodist Hospital North in Memphis, Tn. by ambulance. He did not want to go, but after passing out in front of the paramedics while explaining that he was perfectly fine, the decision was made for him.

He is still there. In the Intensive Care Unit.

This website is for his family and friends. So that they can check up on his latest medical condition, talk about the fun times, and see pictures of him and his loved ones.

Tammie will be posting a lot of their pictures here. And you can too. This is all about Carl and the good times that we have had with him. Carl has family and friends from one end of this country to the other, and a bunch  in between.

Dallas Cowboys

No website about Carl would be complete without updates on the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys are 5 -1 after their first loss to the Patriots last Sunday. I may have had a small part in that defeat, and I apologize for it.

Please forgive me, but I made a bet with Carl that the Patriots would win. Sure, he's in the ICU and not very responsive. But he did respond to our bet, so he now owes me the princely sum of one dollar.

Do I feel guilty? Of course I do.

So I will make it up to him by cheering on the Dallas Cowboys all the way to a Super Bowl victory .

Go Cowboys!!!

Do You Want To Visit Carl?

Visitors are currently being allowed.

This may sometimes change due to circumstances such as planned medical procedures, overcrowding (Carl has many friends), and / or patient discomfort.

If you visit Carl...

Please use your "quiet" voice. Feel free to touch his hand, arm, or forehead; and offer gentle words of encouragement. Most likely, he will not respond, but on some days he might. Treasure that moment, but keep in mind that too much stimuli may make him agitated and restless.

There are only two visitors allowed in the room at a time. When you arrive at the hospital, enter through the main entrance. Walk straight ahead to the elevators and go to the second floor. Turn left for the ICU Waiting Room. Sign in at the desk to the left.

Once you've figured out that no one else has signed in, and no one has any idea who is visiting Carl, casually mention to anyone in hearing distance that you could use a nice meal from the hospital cafeteria.

Editor's Note: This is merely a ruse. Do. Not. Eat. Anything. From. The. Cafeteria!

Then exit Waiting Room, immediately turn right to the stairwell exit. Go up one floor and to the door on the left. Straight ahead will be the hallway leading to Carl's room. At the end of the hall- and to the right- is a button to push to have someone open the doors to the ICU. Carl is in the second room on the right.

Count the people in the room. With people from out of town, the nurses tend to forget the two person only rule to some degree. So announce yourself and check out the situation. You may have to go back out into the hall, but if people know you are there... they will step out so that you can come back in. And you should do that too for other visitors.

Visiting hours are:

6:00am - 6:30am

8:30am -9:00am

11:00am - 1:00pm

4:00pm - 6:00pm

8:30pm - 9:00pm

Medical

Carl is still in the ICU.

He has dialysis treatments daily. When this procedure was first used on him, it was in the hope that it would "restart" his kidneys and liver. That has not happened, and does not appear to be something to hope for.

Nothing is for sure, but it seems likely that Carl will be on some sort of dialysis for the rest of his life.

His breathing is being done by a ventilator. Efforts to take him off of the ventilator have not been successful. A tracheotomy would help, but due to blood pressure and blood loss issues, this procedure cannot be preformed at this time.

Members of Carl's family, and Tammie's, are in town once again.

His condition by medical term is "critical". I would describe it as "dire".

Carl is not doing well.

A Beer On The Pier

I tend to migrate to Florida most summers, and every now and again, I make it out to California.

Many years ago... I was in the Navy and in port at Pearl Harbor. I called my sister, and then called my concert buddy- Tammie- from the hotel.

That one phone call started a trend. The beer on the pier phone call.

Years later, Carl took over the phone calls. He wanted to hear about me standing in the ocean and watching the waves. Or Space Shuttle launches. Whatever.

He likes to know when I have my beer on the pier. It may be too late to ever share one with him on some beach, somewhere. But it's not too late to share pictures of him.

So stay tuned for plenty of pictures of the life and times of Carl Lee Bledsoe III... and updates on his medical condition. Until then... here's a picture that should have been.

The part of Carl and Tammie are being played by some seagulls who wish to remain anonymous. I'm the one with the bird legs.
